授業の教育目的及び方針
In this content-based course, students will further their English language competence naturally by attending classes, taking lecture notes, doing the homework assignments, and participating in class discussion activities. Students will be expected to use new vocabulary in the context of group discussions each week. Students will not only develop English discussion skills, but will gain an anthropological (and critical) understanding of international relations and the role we, as individuals, can play in the making of history.
授業内容
Course Title: Anthropology, Environment, and Development
We will examine the postwar era of Pax Americana from the perspective of the Third World majority and discuss issues of racism and ethnocentrism, militarism and human rights, and development and globalization. We will look at specific examples of postwar U.S. military interventions and support for military regimes in the Third World and relate those examples to Japan's role in the postwar geo-political picture. We will reassess the notion of “Third World development" based on Western cultural, economic, and socio-political assumptions, and examine the associated environmental destruction and cultural disruptions, focusing on the U.S.-Japan-Southeast Asia nexus. We will critically assess some of the socio-cultural effects of development strategies implemented by the World Bank/IMF through several case studies.
Documentary films will be supplemented by lectures or readings related to the film topic. Students are expected to take lecture notes as well as notes pertaining to assigned readings and be prepared for group discussions the following week. I will expect comments and questions to be prepared in advance in order to facilitate group discussions in both Japanese and in English. Students not contributing to discussions will be graded accordingly.
評価方法
Grades will be based on class attendance, active participation in group and class discussions, and weekly written homework assignments.
