授業の教育目的及び方針

This course is intended to be discussion-based rather than lecture-based. We will focus our discussions on contemporary social issues, often utilizing cross-cultural perspectives. Through regular attendance and careful class preparation, students will greatly expand their English vocabulary, further develop English discussion skills as well as critical thinking skills, be exposed to a wide variety of critical interpretations of current events and socio-political issues, and learn to confidently access English-language alternative media as well as grassroots-based organizations for hard-to-find information and analysis via internet(with links provided on my website: http://www.dgmoen.net)

授業内容

In this course, students will be the discussants and choose particular readings that interest them. In this manner, students will take part in designing this course to meet their individual needs and interests. Each student will have the opportunity to lead a class discussion, so you should think about what you're interested in discussing with the class and choose your article carefully(from my Suggested Research Links). Discussants will be required to prepare their articles in advance of distribution by making up vocabulary lists (utilizing a monolingual dictionary) and carefully formulating two or three discussion questions. The discussion questions are intended to provoke the readers (your classmates) into expressing their feelings and opinions concerning the topic in question. Students are expected to prepare for the following week's discussion by looking up any new vocabulary (not on the list) and writing down their responses to the discussion questions in advance of class. In this way, students will be prepared to use new vocabulary in the context of group and class discussions, and we will be able to gain insights into the variety of responses to, and interpretations of, any given material.

評価方法

Grades will be based on class attendance, active participation in group and class discussions, class preparation (written responses to weekly discussion questions), and leading a class discussion based on the article of your choice.

教科書

Textbooks are not required in this course. Copies of required readings (with vocabulary lists and discussion questions) will be provided one week in advance.
