授業の教育目的及び方針
You will learn to access English-language articles by grassroots-based organizations and alternative media via Internet (suggested global links provided on my website: http://www.dgmoen.net) that deal with contemporary social issues. You will greatly expand your English vocabulary as well as improve your discussion skills and critical thinking skills. You will discover that alternative media and grassroots-based interpretations of social phenomena are often very different from those offered in mainstream media analyses.
授業内容
Each student will be responsible for choosing one or two articles for class discussion. You will provide a vocabulary list and two or three discussion questions with your article one week in advance of the article discussion. You will lead the discussion stating why you chose that particular article and introducing the topics covered in the article to your classmates. You will then ask your classmates to form groups to discuss the article and provide group responses to your discussion questions. Finally, you will summarize the discussion and offer your viewpoints on the topic and responses to your own questions.
評価方法
Grades will be based on class attendance, active participation in group and class discussions, class preparation (typed responses to weekly discussion questions), and leading one or two class discussions based on the article(s) of your choice.
教科書
Textbooks are not required in this course. Copies of required readings (with vocabulary lists and discussion questions) will be provided one week in advance.
