授業の教育目的及び方針

Social problems do not exist naturally; certain issues are made social problems by the powerful group while certain others are completely ignored. In other words, to study social problems means to study a power relation between the powerful people who problematize certain issues on one hand and the powerless people who are problematized on the other hand. This course explores some of social issues in Japan not only to understand the current situations of these issues but also to analyze critically what the core problems behind the issues really are.

1. Who are Japanese?: Concepts of Minority, Race and Ethnicity, and Racism
2. Ethnic/Racial Minorities in Japan 1: Zainichi Koreans
3. Ethnic/Racial Minorities in Japan 2: Okinawans
4. Ethnic/Racial Minorities in Japan 3: Ainu/Burakumin
5. Ethnic/Racial Minorities in Japan 4: Exercise and presentation
6. War and Japan 1: U.S. Military Bases in Okinawa: Video
7. War and Japan 2: Article 9 and Self Defense Force
8. War and Japan 3: Exercise and Presentation
9. Gender and Sexual Minority 1: Women and domestic violence
10. Gender and Sexual Minority 2: Sexual minority
11. Gender and Sexual Minority 3: Exercise and presentation
12. Working Poor: Blue-collar workers, Haken-shain, etc.
13. Working Poor: Exercise and presentation

There are no exams.

評価方法

The grades will be based solely on attendance, assignments, class performance, and project.

教科書

No textbook is required. The instructor will give you reading materials when necessary.
I recommend that you bring your dictionary to class.

備考

If you are 5 minutes late to class, it is considered tardiness. If you are tardy to class three times, they will be counted as an absence. You will not pass this class with an A if you make three absences.
