授業の教育目的及び方針

Everyone eats, most people are interested in what they eat, few people know where their food comes from or are aware of the global, political, or ethical implications of their food choices. In this class we will learn more about the food we eat. Course objective: To introduce students to the wider implications and ramifications of the global food situaution; to engage their morality through confrontation with modern farming practices, scientific research, food taboos and inequality; to help them understand that their daily choices can have global significance; to help them become conscientious consumers.

授業内容

Policy of class: All interaction with the teacher will be made in English in this class. Teaching materials include short documentary clips and animations, articles, quizzes and summaries.
1. Homework: What do you eat? Keep a record of everything you eat for a week.
2. Homework: Food in the media - find an interesting article in a newspaper or magazine related to food and summarize it in English.
3. Class warm-up and introduction. Presentation of homework assignments.
4. A typical diet. A balanced diet.
5. Where our food comes from - modern farming techniques, "The Meatrix"animation

7. "Alternative" diets and Taboos - vegetarian, vegan, raw foods etc.
8. Do we need meat? Animal welfare - "Earthlings" documentary.

11. Fast food - "Super Size Me" and "Fast Food Nation".
12. Global food trends. Obesity and lifestyle diseases - the cost to society.
13. The future of food - GM and "Frankenfoods".
14. Food for fuel - bio fuels debate.
15. "The Global Village" - final class dinner party.

評価方法

Grades will be based on class attendance, active class participation, comprehension and homework assignments.

教科書

Not required. Copies of required readings will be given in advance.

Instructions will be given in English at all times.
