授業の教育目的及び方針
The aim is to encourage critical thinking and to imbue participants of the course with a sense of collective responsibility when thinking about and acting in the societies in which they live. Using a DVD documentary, we will explore the origin of corporations, their rise to dominance and acquisition of the rights of legal persons as well as their externalising characteristics and effects on human societies and the environment.In addition, discussions of morality, the profit motive, branding and advertising will be introduced as well as an analysis of different forms of democracy.
授業内容
Case studies will be presented and students will be encouraged to make use of English language media resources to demonstrate their understanding of the themes of the course.
1. Introduction to the course and in-class orientation. What is a corporation?
2. What is a corporation? Part 2. The origin of the corporation and the rights of a legal person.
3. Externalities: The effects of corporate behaviour on third parties and case histories.
4. Labour, sweatshops and exploitation.
5. Pollution and adverse health effects: Minamata Byo and asbestos in Japan.
6. A discussion on moral responsibility, corporate spies and 9/11.
7. Marketing, propaganda and public policy. Pfizer, Disney and a town called Celebration.
8. A discussion on Tokyo Disneyland. Why is it so popular?
9. Media ownership and control. Fox News and the Posilac scandal.
10. Food scandals in Japan. A discussion on their portrayal in the Japanese media.
11. Nazi Germany and IBM. The role of information technology and profit at any price.
12. The corporation and fascism. A discussion about despotism and access to foreign markets.
13. What is democracy? The domination of governments by corporations.
14. The future? Discussions on resistance and collective responsibility for the kind of world we live in.
15. Short group presentations.
評価方法
Students are required to produce one, five hundred to one thousand word essay (two sides of A4) on a topic of their choice and to participate in a short, small group presentation at the end of the semester.

The text is for reference only and can be bought and read in Japanese.

In addition homework and preparation will be considered when assigning grades.
