Course content
The science communication is to tell the science to a citizen, to hear the thought about the science from a citizen, and to think of the science together with a citizen. In this course, students learn the history and the concept of the science communication, and then they learn communication skills through volunteer activities as a science communicator at National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). These activities provide an opportunity for students to consider the relation between science and society, and also their research and society.
Purpose of class
This course polishes your ability to explain difficult research results to others and finally to the world.
Goals and objectives
  1. To understand the history and the concept of science communication.
  2. To cultivate communication skills through volunteer activities as a science communicator at Miraikan.
  3. To consider the relation between science and society, and your own research and society, and then to understand your role to achieve.

1. Introduction to the course: The outline of the course is reviewed by the teacher in charge of the course. * 0minutes
2. Submission of an application of the training at National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation
*) One piece of photograph for the ID card is necessary.

3. A group interview: Prior to the training, students are interviewed in a group by managers of Miraikan, to confirm the purpose of attendance and to give some instructions. * 60minutes
4. Lecture-1: “What is science communication?” * 60minutes
5. Preparatory training: The managers of Miraikan will review the outline and exhibits, and talk on the mental attitude as a science communicator. * 60minutes
6. Setting of the object and the strategy: Students set the object and the strategy to achieve in this course. * 60minutes
7. The first practical training: Students implement the first practical training of the explanation of exhibits to the visitors at Miraikan. * 60minutes
8. The second practical training: Students implement the second practical training of the explanation of exhibits to the visitors at Miraikan. * 60minutes
9. Lecture-2: “Reflection of activities and resetting of the object and the strategy” * 60minutes
10. Resetting of the object and the strategy: Students look back on past activities and reset the object and the strategy. * 60minutes
11. The first practice: Students practice the first activities as a science communicator idependently. * 60minutes
12. The second practice: Students practice the second activities as a science communicator independently. * 60minutes
13. Presentation and discussion: Students present the results of their activities at Miraikan, and discuss with the teachers and other students. * 60minutes
14. Compilation and submission of a report * 60minutes
