Laser and Laser Applications

matsuo shigeki
Course content
Nowadays optics and related technologies are of importance in many fields, including mechanical engineering. In this class, you will study basic optics and lasers, which is the most important light source in modern optical technology, and their applications.
Purpose of class
First, you will learn basic optics, beginning with Maxwell's equation. Next, you will learn the principle of laser oscillation, and the characteristics of laser beam.

Then, you will be introduced various kinds of optics/laser applications, such as distance measurement, shape measurement, optical disk, laser microscope, and laser processing.
Goals and objectives
  1. To learn how optical phenomena and optical technologies are used in mechanical engineering
  2. To learn basic optics
  3. To understand the principle of laser oscillation, and to be able to explain the characteristics of laser beam based on the principle of laser oscillation
  4. To learn various kinds of laser applications
