Course content
This course is an overview of techniques and instrumentation used in surface, interface and thin film analysis. The principles of each technique will be given, followed by specific examples of practical applications.
Purpose of class
After taking this course students will have a basic knowledge of techniques used in surface analysis of metals, semiconductors and polymers. Students will learn specific applications and limitations of each technique and will be able to interpret data obtained with a given technique.
Goals and objectives
  1. To understand the fundamental aspects of physics and chemistry of surfaces.
  2. To understand properties of surfaces and techniques used for surface analysis.
  3. To be familiar with thin film technology and surface modification techniques.
