Course description
Various materials have been widely used for Automotive, Electrical and Electronics, Construction, Fibers, Medical and healthcare, Foods, as basis of human life. Variety of materials have been historically expanded from stone and woods to synthesized inorganic and organic materials. Applications expect physical properties for mechanical and constructions, and functionalities of electrical, adhesives, optical features and others for many parts and components. Contributions of materials will be briefly reviewed, then discuss necessity of new materials in this course. Strategy of new material development will be discussed. Participants will choose a specific material category to study its market, background of new materials, and impact to society to understand MONOTSUKURI industry. One or two external lecturers will be invited to learn real example of new material business.
Detail design of the course is under development, and this syllabus might be changed before the 4th quarter.


Purpose of class
Obtain understanding of new material business and its development processes. Be able to apply the understanding for differentiation when each participants develop own new products or new businesses by utilizing new materials.

Goals and objectives
  1. Be able to explain examples how the material has been used for certain applications for actual use and differentiation.

  2. Understand characteristics of material businesses and relations to other industries. Based on the understanding become to propose how each participant work with material companies for own business.

  3. Understand the necessity and its potential contributions of new materials for differentiation. Become able to propose how each participant collaborate with material company for own differentiation.

・Meeting basic requirements : 60 points
・Meeting requirements with logical background. : 70 points
・Meeting requirements by utilizing knowledge obtained in the course. Presentation is clear with logical sequences. : 80 points.
