Course description
This course focuses on the functional areas and current issues in Human Resource (HR) management in Japan. Topics covered include: planning & managing, recruitment, selection, performance evaluation, compensation & welfare and issues such as workplace diversity and career development. Emphasis is placed on the strategic role of HRM from the MOT standpoint.
Purpose of class
This course is an applied course for students in the Graduate School of Engineering Management (MOT). The course is designed to provide MOT students with exposure of HR and to provide an opportunity to apply some the conceptual frameworks/theories introduced particularly in Organizational Behavior (OB), which is highly recommended before taking this course.
Goals and objectives
  1. To understand interactively the primary function of human resource management and how the separate functions relate to each other. The focus will be on contemporary human resource management functions as practices in most moderate and large organizations in Japan.
  2. To understand major human resource management functions through active learning processes (e.g. team exercises, case analysis, presentations, guest speakers).
  3. To demonstrate how to use solve basic human resource management problems in human resource planning and in the evaluation of human resource management functions.

Prerequisite: None

Preparations for the 1st day: Think about your workplace and the incidents that you had difficulty to overcome, such as project delay, relationships with supervisors/subordinates, and workplace motivation. Remember how you and related others dealt with these issues. This exercise will provide better understanding of the introduction in the 1st day.
