Advanced Applied Cellular Devices

futai nobuyuki
Course content
The cells have been widely used in biomedical researches as they are the smallest elements of life and are able to be cultured and proliferated. The cell technology also enabled adding functionality to cells. However, it is not still easy to handle cells as engineering parts like machine elements or electronic devices because cells overgrow, degrade and eventually die. The minimum requirements for gaining accessibility and portability in cultured cells are still not clear.

Here we look at the cell culture technology from a mechanical engineering aspect. We develop easy-to-handle devices that contain cell cultures that can be used by anyone anywhere anytime. The goal of these devices is an improvement in healthcare, environment, and education fields.
Purpose of class
Development of technologies relevant to "making animal cell culture more manageable using engineering approaches".
Goals and objectives
  1. Students should set a goal of their research project based their knowledge of the problems in cell culture techniques with the view of engineering.
  2. Students should design and fabricate an easy-to-use device in which animal cells can be maintained or proliferated.
  3. Student should quantify conditions or behavior of cells in the device using appropriate assay methods.
