Basic Solid State Chemistry 1
Many familiar substances and materials are solids. In order to understand basic solid properties, it is necessary to know
that the structure, stability, and electronic characteristics of the material with individual atomic and moleculer arrangements.
In this class, we will focus on the understanding of molecular arrangements with symmetric operations in crystals, for engineers.
As a preliminary step in handling crystals and materials in specialized subjects, we will learn with the aim of learning the
basic structure of chemistry and the array structure and properties of solid materials in our surroundings from a chemical
point of view.
Understand how the constituent particles of solid such as atoms and molecules are arranged in the crystal based on the chemical
interactions. Basic information of crystal unit structures of solid and the corresponding microscopic viewpoint will be treated.
1. To be able to write the electronic arrangements of major elements and coordination structures of transition metals up to
the third period.
2. To be able to understand and calculate the body-centered lattice, face-centered lattice, hexagonal closest packing, unit
lattice, atomic radius, and filling factor.
3. To be able to explain the symmetry of simple molecules consisting of 3 to 7 atoms from symmetric operation.
