Course description
The purpose of this course is to develop the ability of students to read relatively complex texts both accurately and smoothly. Using materials likely to be of interest to students majoring in engineering or technical fields, the course will encourage students to read texts for meaning, without relying on translation into Japanese. They will practice both close reading techniques and strategies for speed reading, such as skimming, scanning, and reading for gist. Students will also be expected to respond to the texts by summarizing, analyzing and discussing what they have read.

  1. To be able to comprehend relatively complex texts about science and technology.
  2. To be able to employ techniques to improve reading speed and smoothness.
  3. To be able to develop thinking skills by summarizing and discussing reading content.
