Course description
The purpose of this course is to enhance the ability of students to read complex authentic texts from science magazines both accurately and smoothly. Using materials related to science, engineering and technology, the course will encourage students to read texts for meaning, without relying on translation into Japanese. They will practice both close reading techniques and strategies for speed reading by grasping the organization of the text. Students will also be expected to respond to the texts by summarizing, analyzing and discussing what they have read. The capacity of this class is 20 students.
Purpose of class
The purpose of this course is to enhance the ability of students to read complex authentic texts from science magazines both accurately and smoothly.
Goals and objectives
  1. To be able to understand scientific journal/magazine articles accurately and to grasp the flow of ideas correctly.
  2. To be able to understand English texts without translating them into Japanese and grasp what the author intends to convey.
  3. To be able to read English passages by predicting the following contents based on the knowledge of information structural patterns of English passages.
  4. To be able to use academic vocabulary including scientific terms as much as possible.
