Course description
In this course, we aim to deepen our understanding on the possibility of coexistence for people different in any aspects to each other to overcome the difference, collision and conflict. We put focus on the fact that many companies / enterprises in the world put high value on the “diversity” of human resources as the key to the growth, irrespective of the region, industry or business scale, and also seek for human resources who can display their ability in the diversified world. In this course, students will learn about the essential concept and knowledge for themselves to work as the human resources who can display such ability.The class is consisted of the following three themes: (1) Understanding the diversity – its meaning and possibility / difficulty such as collisions and conflicts, and how to overcome the same; (2) Various aspects of the diversity – races, ethnic groups, cultures, religions, sex and gender, generations, diseases and disabilities, etc.; (3) Practicing promotion and utilization of the diversity / practicing the solution of problems involving the diversity.
Purpose of class
Learning becomes meaningful and something new will be born where people of different situation, different concepts of values and different ways of thinking intercommunicate. The purpose of this class is to respect the difference and cultivate the tolerance and flexible creativity to create excellent and new products / concepts through the cooperation between people with different attributes, situations and ways of thinking in an organization composed of diverse human resources.
Goals and objectives
  1. Recognize and explain the importance and possibility of an environment where the diversity can be tolerated and secured.
  2. Recognize and express the degree of tolerance of yourself against the “otherness”.
  3. Understand the concept and practice of the diversity management of the organizations including companies, and explain your thought on such concept / practice correlating with your own future.

Evaluation method and criteria
The evaluation will be made in the following way: Willingness to the participation in the class accounts for 20%, and the study goal attainment level accounts for 80%.
The willingness to the participation in the class will be evaluated mainly based on the minute paper which every student should submit, and the study goal attainment will be evaluated mainly based on the term-end examination. The term-end examination will be conducted in description type, where you will describe your own analysis and consideration on the task. In the examination, what is examined are as follows, and the accuracy and deepness will be considered: (1) your understanding about the meaning of the diversity; (2) your understanding of the tolerance against the otherness; and (3) your understanding of the diversity management and the correlation thereof to yourself.
