Introduction to Structural Planning

kumazawa fumitoshi
Course description
What is the role of structure in the planning process of buildings? It is one of essential elements in the process of creating a real building from an image of a building drawn on paper.
Students should understand the position and the role of the structure in the process throughout this lecture. The principal objective of this lecture is put in acquiring the knowledge about the field of structure widely.
At first, structural materials used for buildings and the loads considered for the structural design will be described, and the outline of structural analyses using them will be presented in this lecture.
The typical structures including timber structure, steel structure and reinforced concrete structure will be taken up, and the concepts of those characteristics and the outline of the design method will be explained.
The damage cases of buildings due to severe earthquakes will be introduced at the end of the lecture. I hope that students recognize the importance of structure in architecture through this description.
Purpose of class
The purpose of this lecture is to understand the position and the role of the structure in the planning process of buildings, and acquire the knowledge about the field of structure widely.
