Course content
This course conveys the structure of Tokyo and architecture. The series of lectures and site visits will focus on the urban theory by Fumihiko Maki as well as on the actual players/ design forces of the formation of Tokyo.
Purpose of class
The purpose of this class is to understand various intentional and/or inherent factors for the development of a city. The students will acquire the basic skill to read various layers which influence the urban forms, such as theory, history, culture, topology, etc, from its physical appearance.
Goals and objectives
  1. Acquire the theory on urbanism by Fumihiko Maki
  2. Acquire the unique condition of architecture in Japan and able to give an example.
  3. Understand the urban structure and development through the project design
