Course description
This course is to examine multiple aspects of engineering ethics from philosophical view points.
Purpose of class
Engineering ethics are for students of engineering. Yet, it comes to be an important branch of applied ethics. This course tries to examine studies in engineering ethics as a branch of philosophy. The main purpose of this course is to deepen the understanding of engineering practice particularly in terms of analytic ethics and philosophy of action. The focus of the course is particularly on social aspects of engineering practice. An engineering enterprise is an aggregation of multiple tasks jointly implemented by many individual engineers toward an ultimate goal. We will examine engineering disasters caused by malfunctioning of such a cooperative system, and investigate the concept of responsibility essential to engineering practice as a collective action.
