3 Engineering Ethics
This course is to examine multiple aspects of engineering ethics from philosophical view points.
Engineering ethics are for students of engineering. Yet, it comes to be an important branch of applied ethics. This course
tries to examine studies in engineering ethics as a branch of philosophy. The main purpose of this course is to deepen the
understanding of engineering practice particularly in terms of analytic ethics and philosophy of action. The focus of the
course is particularly on social aspects of engineering practice. An engineering enterprise is an aggregation of multiple
tasks jointly implemented by many individual engineers toward an ultimate goal. We will examine engineering disasters caused
by malfunctioning of such a cooperative system, and investigate the concept of responsibility essential to engineering practice
as a collective action.
- To explain the philosophical background of engineering ethics
- To discuss engineering ethics philosophically in English
- To examine and criticize methodological problems of engineering ethics
