Introduction to Physics

In this class, we give students an introduction to physics in a way that you can prepare for studying classical mechanics, and classical electrodynamics, and thermal physics. For selected issues in an elementary physics course, students learn basic concepts of physics as well as a mathematical skills. Both are very important for all the students in modern engineering. This class consists of a lecture and a practice on problems. Students must learn by themselves through the problems how the real world and its phenomena are modeled, solved, and interpreted by physics.

Students first learn how the physics are written by mathematics, particularly by calculus. Then, students must solve equations of motion for a fall motion by gravity and an oscillation motion. Of course, they must explain the motion by the solution of the equation. After the mechanics part, students learn a law of Coulomb, a Gauss law of electric field, an electric potential, and a direct-current circuit. For example, a space integration of Coulomb force yields a real electric force maintained by distributed charges. This integration is skipped by an arithmetic multiplication. An electric potential is obtained by a line integration of the electric field, by which a capacity of an condenser are calculated. Students must understand these concepts and perform calculations. Finally, students must explain a relationship between the transient phenomena in the direct-current circuit and the results of the mechanics part, a fall motion by gravity and a oscillation motion.
