Course description
Many of students in the School of Systems Engineering and Science may be interested in ‘design’ in different ways according to their majors. In this course, students will understand (1) various fields of ‘design’, (2) the development of the ideas of ‘design’ from the nineteenth century to up to now in the world, especially western countries and Japan, and (3) the roles of design in the 21st century and the future.
Purpose of class
Design is related to art, technology, society, economics, politics, culture, environment, psychology, the body and many other fields. In addition, design itself has many fields such as product design, interior design and others. This course provides a framework for considering the concepts of design for students whose majors and interests are varied. It focuses on the following two points: (1) How has ‘design’ been discussed and what was aimed in the process of industrialisation and the development of nation states? We will take an example of product design here. (2) How does ‘design’ play a role in international society in the future? Through these points students will think about what design is. The course includes group discussions and presentations to encourage students to participate in the class actively.
Goals and objectives
  1. To understand merits and demerits brought by modernisation and industrialisation, and what design in the 21st century should be, as well as to express themselves about these points.
  2. To study the exchange of design among countries in modern and contemporary history and to understand the roles of design, which always moves, blends and develops, and to gain new points of view.
  3. To learn how to decide a topic for the final essay and to collect materials and conduct research.
