2 Universal Design
Universal Design is the concept to design products, information, facilities and services so that it can be accessed, understood
and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, gender, size, native language, nationality,
ability or disability. This class introduces the current “good practices” and “bad practice” in Universal Design regarding
commodity products, home electric appliances, information products, software applications, websites and living spaces. Those
examples provide a better understanding of the concept of universal design. Experience classes by using elderly simulation
kits and wheelchairs are also conducted for deep understanding of UD. This class focuses on not only understanding the concept
of UD but also the design processes from the universal design points of view.
The purpose of this class is to understand the meanings of universal design, and develop the ability of plan and design universal
design products/services.
