7. | (5/27) Basics of Fluid Mechanics (Katsuaki Shirai) The students learn the fundamental aspecst of fluid and flow. Fluid mechanics related to water and aif flows is one of the dynamics subjects on mechanical engineering. The subject has a close relation to the "Hydrodynamics 1", fluid "Hydrodyancis 2" in the 2nd year, "Fluid Mechanics 1", "Fluid Mechanics 2" and "Heat Transfer Engineering" in the 3rd year. We start the class from a simple question of the definition of fluid. The students learn three-phases of matter (solid, liquid and gas), difference between solids and fluids, continuum bodies. Them they learn mass conservation based on flowrate and engineering applications of fluid flow. Assignment will be done during in the class. |
(Preparation) 1) Describe the definition of 'fluid' at studying the basic of fluid mechanics. Before searching in textbooks and internet, write down what you think at first. 2) Besides, think about application of fluid flows. It is important to think by yourself before making literature search. | 130minutes |
(Review) You are asked to think again on the definition of fluid, based on what you learned at the class. Review on the basic properties of fluids, three phases of matter, difference of solid and fluid and continuum bodies.Think also back on the flow rate in terms of mass conservation. Those who are interested are advised to deepen the knowledge by reading textbooks such as hydrodynamics and fluid mechanics towards the subject 'Hydrodynamics 1' in the 2nd year. The extensive knowledge are certainly related to Hydrodynamics 1, Hydrodynamics 2, Fluid Mehanics 1, Fluid Mechanics 2 and Heat Transfer Engineeringin the further study at the department of mechanical engineering. | 60minutes
8. | The objective is for students to learn analytical and numerical treatment of vibration phenomena. | Preparation:Solve the problems written in the handout. | 180minutes |
9. | (6/10)Basis of Control Engineering (Yutaka Uchimrua) Control engineering is applied to various fields such as automobiles, automation machines, and advanced robots. This lecture outlines the theoretical and systematic control engineering of the system in order to perform stable and desired operation. |
(preparation) Self-study of knowledge on how automated machines and robots are controlled, books, and the Internet | 90minutes |
(Review) Review the contents learned in the lecture and investigate the application of the control theory. | 90minutes
10. | (6/17)Basics in mechanical design (Nobuyuki Futai) 1) The design (a process of making things) and there mechanical design therein are characterized. 2) Steps of the mechanical design from concept to drawings is explained. 3) Some key tools in the mechanical engineering -- machine elements, mechanical drawing, and technical caliculation are introduced. |
(Preparation) The objective of the mechanical design is obviously to creat machines. Now think about whether on the other hand a mechanical design is nessary to create a machine. And what kind of activities should called a design? Describe your own words on these two questions. | 100minutes |
(Review) What you will need to learn to design machines? Search SIT Library and find some books you think you will definitely need before staring your own mechanical design. The reason of your selection should be given. Recording brief reviews on the selected books are recommended. | 100minutes
11. | (6/24)Fundamentals of Information retrieval, selection and management by using library (Kazumi Tsunoda) Since an academic library contributes to supporting our research and education, students need to learn how to use the library to facilitate learning in the university. In the 11th lecture, students will develop the ability to search, collect, select and manage information with the aid of various types of databases and reference management services. To gain a deeper understanding of the use of the library, students will take a short tour of the Omiya library. At the end of the lecture, we conduct a quiz on library use. |
(Preparation) 1) Access a website of S.I.T. Library and complete to register “My Library”. 2) Access a menu of “Search Materials”, and investigate services and electronic resources. 3) Organize the features and merits of services provided by library. |
90minutes |
(Review) Examine issues by using library services. | 100minutes
12. | In the field of engineering, it is essential to have the ability to utilize information appropriately to achieve own work. Since IT technology has been developed, it is required to collect and organize information efficiently using computers and be able to summarize the information easily to other people. In this class, we will explain the basics of how to handle information using computers through practical training such as numerical data processing and graph creation. | · [Preliminary] Process given numerical data and try to organize information so that it is efficient and contents are easy to understand in order to achieve the purpose. | 70minutes |
· [Review] Do numerical data processing tasks to be presented in the lecture. | 120minutes
13. | Machine work(Safety education)・Tour of “Machining center”(Takao Utsunomiya) To use machine tools safely, the following matters are explained as "Safety lecture of machining" ・5S on safety ・Arrangement and cleanliness ・Summary of machine tools After the safety education, students visit the facilities (machine tools) of "Machining center". |
Preparation: Student make a report on the following matters. ・What kind of machine tools are a lathe, a milling machine and a drilling machine. ・What kind of knowledge is necessary to use above machine tools safely. |
120minutes |
Review: After the lecture, students add and correct report contents of preparation. | 70minutes
14. | Overview of mechanical engineering and engineering ethics: Mechanical engineering is the core technology aimed at manufacturing, and approaches are required to solve problems based on many different fields at the development, design and production sites. These examples show the role of engineers who learned mechanical engineering and also the importance of drawing as communication tools. Finally, ethics which should be kept in an engineer's mind will be shown. |
Preperatiojn: Summerize what kind of field on which you want to work in the future, and what kind of abilities are necessery to be the engineers who works in such field. | 70minutes |
Review: After the lecture, make it clear about what you should learn in order to realize the hope summarized in the preparation. | 120minutes
