Course description
Ceramic materials have been widely used as a ceramic product conventionally.
Especially the electrical and electronics industry is carried out which rapid material development, innovative research and development. "Functional ceramic materials (new ceramics and fine ceramics)" is added many new features, their use and demand has attracted attention as a new material extending dramatically. This lecture is to introduce the new functional and structural characteristics of the ceramic materials. In particular, this lecture is to clarify the definition of new ceramic materials, the differences in conventional ceramic and new ceramic materials, and the position as materials in the advanced society.
Attainment target:
Ceramic materials have been related to dramatic development in advanced industries and high technology, and necessary in the field of electronic and magnetic materials and ICT society. Then, this lecture aims to understand ceramic materials based on enough academic knowledges.
Purpose of class
The current materials fall into three categories: metal, organic, and inorganic materials. This lecture is the only subject that teaches the inorganic material. A purpose of this lecture is to understand the chemical bond determining material properties of matter from a basic viewpoint of the quantum chemistry. It is also intended to understand the advanced materials, e.g., semiconductor materials, fullerene, and carbon-nano-tube. Then, this lecture is to clarify the high-tech materials such as the aerospace, biomedical, nuclear, and fuel cell materials as application field of ceramic material. In addition, it is also intended to learn fundamentals, applications, and practical use of silicon and III-V type semiconductors.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand and learn the differences between conventional ceramic and new ceramic materials.
  2. Understand and learn the characteristics of the fine structure of new ceramic materials.
  3. Understand and learn the application fields of new ceramic materials.
  4. Understand and learn the definition, type, characteristics, microstructure and applications etc. of semiconductors.
