Course description
Transient phenomena is a rapidly changing action occurring in a circuit during the interval between initial-state and steady-state conditions. The aim of this course is to help students to understand the transient phenomena of a voltage and a current in a circuit and to be able to solve the problem. The methods to solve the problem are based on 1) differential equations and b) the Laplace transform.
Purpose of class
The purpose of this course is to help students to
(1) Understand how to express the transient phenomena in a circuit, propagation of electro-magnetic- and light-waves.
(2) Be able to calculate transient response of electrical signals by using first and second order differential equations.
(3) Be able to solve the equations analytically.
Goals and objectives
  1. Being able to express the transient phenomena with first and second order differential equations and to solve the equations.
  2. Being able to explain principles and applications of electrical circuits for differentiating and integrating signals with respect to time.
  3. Being able to explain the Laplace transform and to obtain the solutions of response signals in the case of inputting various signals which include unit impulse and rectangular pulse.

Evaluation method and criteria
Midterm exam 40 %, term-end exam 60 %. Total score of 60% is needed to get a credit.
Students can get the total score of 60% if they can solve 50% exercises in the text.
