In this course, students will learn about architecture through the following process:
- Lectures on the architectural forms and the analytical methods according to the different building types.
- Analysis on Plan Composition and Circulation, etc.
- Finding Patterns for Architectural Form
- Presentations of findings and Discussions
Through this process, students should acquire the professional skill to read and understand architectural documents, as well as deepen their understanding of the relationship between the architectural forms and their functions and meanings. The accumulation of this knowledge should contribute to the design skill. Also, students should learn diverse perspectives on architecture through sharing the findings with the classmates by presentations and discussions.
This class is designated as a prerequisite course (Architectural Planning) to take Architect Registration Exam in Japan.

The aim of the course is for students to study various architectural forms and the cultural, functional and structural meanings
behind them through analyses and categorization of different architecture, so that they should acquire the architectural language,
which is useful for the practice of planning and design.
- To be able to make diagrams to show the relationship between architectural forms and spaces.
- To be able to develop the skill to read architectural documents and to explain the knowledge on how architecture is planned and designed.
- To be able to present the analysis of architecture from various points of view and to exchange the ideas with other students in English.

Final grades are computed as follows:
6 presentations (70%); Small exams and Participation in Discussion (30%).
Those who score above 60 points shall pass the course.

Students are expected to review the courses on architecture they completed in the 1st and the 2nd grade.
Students who entered SIT after 2018 must have a TOEIC score of 500 or above, or equivalent ability in English. Maximum number of students in this class is twenty. If the enrollment entry exceeds over twenty, those who have higher score of TOEIC will be accepted. Priority will be given to the students in the International Program. Students who entered SIT before 2017 and do not have a TOEIC score of above 500 should contact the instructor before final registration. Short term international students who have equivalent skill of English can take this class by the approval of instructor.
