Course content
In “Optical Fiber Engineering”, the basic contents are provided in the theory and application of optical fiber communication technology. At first, introductory reviews are explained, that is, the principles of optics. Then, properties of optical waveguides and optical fibers are studied. Attenuation characteristics and dispersion characteristics of silica optical fibers are also studied.
Purpose of class
Characteristics of optical waves are studied for comprehension of
the application of optical fibers.
Goals and objectives
  1. will comprehend optical communication systems.
  2. will comprehend basic theories of lightwaves and be able to derive wave equations from Maxwell’s equations.
  3. will comprehend refraction and reflection of lightwaves and be able to explain total reflection.
  4. will be able to solve wave equations and explain electromagnetic fields of guided modes.
  5. will comprehend attenuation and dispersion characteristics of optical fibers.
