Course description
The aim of this course is to develop the students’ reading and writing skills. By reading passages of a variety of content, students will enhance their ability to read both for gist and specific details without relying on translation into Japanese. They will also use the passages to improve their usage of grammar, and will be expected to respond to what they have read with discussions and short writing assignments. They will also be required to study the sub textbook through self-study to gain higher scores on the Reading Section of the TOEIC test.
Purpose of class
To develop the students’ reading and writing skills.

  1. To be able to read texts of general content accurately and smoothly.
  2. To be able to understand and employ a range of fundamental grammar and vocabulary.
  3. To be able to discuss and write about what has been read.
  4. To be able to gain a higher score on the TOEIC test.

A score of 60 % is needed to pass this course.
Students can expect to obtain more than 60 points if their performance on tests and assignments shows that they have mostly comprehended the learning contents of the course.

section in A Shorter Course in Usage and Vocabulary.
*40% of mid-term and final exams are taken from Vocabulary Preview in Skillful Reading & Writing and Let's Try section in A Shorter Course in Usage and Vocabulary.
