Course description
In this course, students conduct engineering experiments related to the fundamental topics in the mechanical engineering fields (Mechanics of Materials, Hydrodynamics, Thermodynamics, Mechanical Vibrations and Control Engineering). Students control experimental apparatuses by themselves and recognize the physical phenomena.
Students have to attend the first lecture. For reference, themes conducted in 2019 are introduced as follows.
Purpose of class
The objective of this course is to equip the students with the skills necessary to conduct engineering experiments. It includes
・recognizing various physical phenomena
・understanding general principles of measurement systems
・performing basic data analysis

  1. Ability to conduct basic experiments related to mechanical engineering using the measurement system
  2. Ability to use appropriate graphs or tables to display and interpret results
  3. Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data using software used by mechanical engineers

General exam in mechanical engineering
In the first lecture, the general exam is designed to ascertain the student's general knowledge of the fundamental topics in the mechanical engineering fields. The general exam is given for each thematic area held in 1st and 2nd year’s lecture course: Mechanics of Materials, Hydrodynamics, Thermodynamics, Mechanical Vibration and Machine Design & Drawing. The exam is written in English.

Orientation
(1) Experiment orientation
Schedule, grouping, grading, general precaution and precaution for each theme. The handout summarizing the detailed schedules is distributed to all students at the first lecture.

(2) Library orientation
Read the general lab manual for mechanical engineering. 20minutes
Each group conducts the following themes in accordance with the schedule. Students need to prepare their lesson referring to following. Reports should be submitted within one week from the date of completion of experiment. Submitted reports are checked by teaching staff. Students have to resubmit the corrected report by the specified day. All the reports have to be submitted to pass the course.
(1) Visualization of Temperature Distribution by Mach–Zehnder interferometer (Yamada)
To understand physical phenomena, various types of measurement techniques are applied. Such measurement techniques can be categorized into two types, invasive and non-invasive measurements. In the present experiment, students will measure the temperature distribution of candle flame using Mach–Zehnder interferometer, which is one of the well-established non-invasive technique for temperature measurement.

(2) Frictional vibration(Saeki)
 The acquisition of fundamental knowledge regarding vibration problems is important in mechanical design. This experiment focuses on the frictional vibration of the single degree of freedom system. This experiment provides insight to vibration through hands-on demonstration and experimentation.

(3) Uncertainty analysis (Tsunoda)
Measurement is a fundamental process in approaching engineering problems. However, all measurements of variable contain inaccuracies. Therefore it is important to understand appropriate techniques of measurement data analysis.
In the present experiment, students will measure the sizes of simple objects and conduct uncertainty analysis.

(4) Temperature measurement (Yahagi)
Temperature is a very important quantity of state, and measurement accuracy of temperature is very important issue in quantifying phenomena. There are a lot of temperature measurement methods and those have advantages and disadvantages. In this theme, we make a temperature measuring device and learn how to use it in experientially.

Frequency Analysis and Digital Filter (Uchimura)

This course aims to acquire the theory and method for analyzing vibration phenomena such as mechanical vibration and radio waves in the frequency domain. After actually sampling the signal in discrete time by A/D conversion, spectrum analysis is performed by digital Fourier transform and fast Fourier transform (FFT) by the program created by itself. Also, to eliminate the noise contained in the data, build a digital low-pass filter and learn about the effect of the filter.

(6) Tesile tests for metallic materials (Sakaue)
Characteristics of materials such as Young's modulus, tensile strength etc. are extremely important, because these characteristics are frequently used for designing machines and structures. Tensile test is widely used to evaluate the characteristics, therefore, mechanical engineer must understand the method of tensile tests. This experiment measures the characteristics of typical metallic materials in order to understand the evaluation method and mechanical properties.

(7) Measurement of drag force which acts on the obstacles in the flow (Y. Suwa)
Comprehension on the drag force by the fluid is very important especially to design airplanes and automobiles. It is also important on studying the behavior of aerosols or colloidal substances. In this class, drag force of a sphere in uniform airflow will be measured, and changes in the drag coefficient for the Reynolds number will be studied. Drag coefficient of various shape obstacles will be also evaluated.

(8) Non-contact measurement of the diameter of a fiber (Matsuo)
Optical/laser measurements are used in many fields of engineering and science. This is because of the advantages such as non-contact, non-invasive, and preciseness. In this experiment the diameter of a fine fiber is measured with various methods including laser diffraction. From that students will acquire the characteristics and advantages optical methods over the others.

Evaluation method and criteria
The grade weights are
(1)General exam in mechanical engineering:10 points
(2)Initial submitted report:40 points
(3)Final report:50 points
Scored larger than 60 points will be passed.
Late reports submitted at first time will be down graded 20 points.
Late reports without permission will be down graded 2 points per day.

The instruction produced by Department of Mechanical Engineering is distributed.
Prerequisites
It is preferable to pass all compulsory subjects from the curriculum for the 1st and 2nd year.
Read the textbook carefully prior to each experiment.
The pre-assignment for each theme is introduced at the first lecture.
