Course description
In this course, students will learn specific engineering knowledge in widely chosen topics. Each topic is shown in the class schedule. The course also aim understanding not only the backgrounds and objective of each experimental exercise but also the concept of physical theories by observing real phenomena.
Purpose of class
To get understanding for some typical engineering phenomena, and fundamental abilities for conducting, analyzing and reporting an experiment.
Goals and objectives
  1. To get the ability to understand the objective and content of each exercise topic from scientific and engineering viewpoints
  2. To get the ability to analyze experimental results from scientific and engineering viewpoints
  3. To get the literacy to report the experimental results according to the format of scientific paper
Language
Japanese
Class schedule

Class schedule HW assignments (Including preparation and review of the class.) Amount of Time Required
1. Guidance for the course Reading the textbook 140minutes
2. Heat cycle Reading the textbook and documenting the objective and methodology of each topic. 140minutes
3. Heat cycle (2)

<Measurement of internal combustion engine performance>
A visualization engine is used to actually measure and evaluate shaft torque, net output, and fuel consumption rate. Deepen understanding of the mechanism and operating principle of the engine (spark ignition engine) and the combustion phenomenon in the engine.
(Preparation) Read the text. Before conducting the experiment, watch the movies to understand the flow of the experiment. Access method will be announced on the Scomb.
(Review) Create a report about the experiment.
140minutes
4. Fluid dynamics(1)

Flow visualization experiments on laminar and turbulent flows in tubes after understanding the related basic knowledge in a lecture. The students will collect and consider data obtained from the experiment.
Reading the textbook and documenting the objective and methodology of each topic. 140minutes
5. Fluid dynamics(2)

The students will conduct experiments using a wind tunnel for the flow around an object. First, after understanding the related basic knowledge in a lecture, we will proceed to the measurement experiments. They will use Venturi tube, Pitot tube, and measure and consider data about flow around various objects, drag, lift, etc.

Evaluation method and criteria
Students' reports will be examined by the corresponding professor of each topic, then the average of all scores will be used for evaluation. Students must attend the all experimental exercises and reports for all exercises. Student with more than 60% of the total score will be given credit.
Textbooks and reference materials
Reference materials are explained by each experiment.
Prerequisites
Students should read and study the textbook in advance and understand the overview of the experiment.
Office hours and How to contact professors for questions
  • Students should refer the guide for the office hours of each professor. Contact in the experiment room before or after this course is welcome.
