Course description
It is essential for science and engineering students to use the Internet, create documents, handle spreadsheets, and so on. However, PCs are used in home or primary and secondary school education nowadays, and most students are thought to used to PC tools such as word processor and PowerPoint. On the other hand, in recent years, the ability to analyze a large amount of data obtained from the Internet and extract meaningful information (data science technology) has been regarded as important. So, in this course, we will focus on software called TeX, which excels at describing and printing mathematical formulas, for document creation and presentation. Regarding data science, we will use the spreadsheet software Excel to learn how to use Excel itself and learn the basics of statistical processing. We also will touch on the beginnings of programming through a very simple program.
Purpose of class
Learn how to use the typesetting software TeX to create documents and presentation manuscripts which contain many mathematical formulas. Also, learn the basics of data science through data processing excercises using Excel. In addition, by writing a simple program, touch the beginning of programming.
Goals and objectives
  1. Learn about TeX and to be able to create documents including mathematical formulas
  2. To be able to analyze data with Excel
  3. Understand basic programming concepts
