Course description
 The aim of this course is to review modern and contemporary European (Western) history. Historical knowledge remains indispensable for understanding politics, societies and cultures of the present-day world more deeply. This course deals with the basic, but important terms and concepts in history and historiography such as Enlightenment, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Human rights, Constitution, Liberalism, Nationalism, Nation State, Socialism, Imperialism, World War, Fascism / Nazism(National Socialism), Holocaust, Cold War, etc. We cover not only political / diplomatic history, but also some topics of cultural / social history (We utilize historical materials, photos etc.). The class is composed mainly of the lecture, and of exercises on certain primary sources as well. Through this process you get a glimpse into the métier of historians. Participants are expected to take part in the class actively.
Purpose of class
The background knowledge that you acquire through this course help you achieve a better performance in their studies in the College of Engineering and Design.
The methodology of arts and humanities including history is useful to detect, analyze and solve problems in other contexts such as private life and business. This class is aimed at giving you some of such basic methods.
Goals and objectives
  1. The goals of this course are to be able to understand and explain the basic and important topics of the modern and contemporary Europe.
  2. The goals of this course are to obtain knowledge about art, culture, society, etc. of the modern and contemporary Europe, and be able to understand and explain that with relevance to the comprehensive history.
  3. By the end of the course, participants should understand and explain the basic perspective and method of historical studies, and acquire the basic skills to develop their own ideas on history.
