Course description
The course is for 3rd year undergraduate students of the Innovative Global Program of Shibaura Institute of Technology. “Functional materials” are materials that have one or more properties that can be significantly altered through the introduction of external stimuli (e.g. temperature, electric/magnetic field, etc.), and are therefore applied in a broad range of technological devices such as memories, displays and telecommunication devices. The course will cover the fundamentals of several typical functional materials like optical, electrical, thermal, or magnetic materials and their respective required processing technologies, working principles and related applications.
Purpose of class
The class will focus on allowing students to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the importance of the interplay between the synthesis, structure, characterization, processing, applications and performance of functional materials.

Several preparation techniques, various modern applications, and future trends of the said materials based on recent research progress will be outlined.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped with a profound knowledge of the various microstructures, physical properties, and the possible applications of functional materials.

Evaluation method and criteria
The students will be evaluated based on:
- partial exam #1: questionnaire in class on lectures 1~5, counting at max for 20% of the total score
- partial exam #2: questionnaire in class on lectures 7~10, counting at max for 20% of the total score
- partial exam #3: report on a topic of choice, counting at max for 30% of the total score
- partial exam #4: presentation on a topic of choice, counting at max for 30% of the total score
60% is the minimum score to pass the course.
No final examination will be provided
