Course description
All machines consist of various machine elements. However, in order to design a machine as a mechanical engineer, it is important to understand mechanism and function of machine elements.
In this lecture, we will take bolted joints, shaft couplings, clutch and brake, packing and gasket, spring and so on as a mechanical element used in many machines and give lectures on their strength, function and mechanism.
Purpose of class
Mechanical engineers need to understand not only the name, strength, function and mechanism of mechanical elements such as bearings, shaft couplings, bolted joints, but also how to use and applications thereof. In this lecture, we aim to be able to design machine elements such bolted joints, shaft couplings, clutch and brake, packing and gasket, spring by understanding the functions thereof.
Goals and objectives
  1. To understand and to be able to explain method of mechanical design.
  2. To understand basic theory in strength of materials and to be able to explain them.
  3. To understand roles of bolted joints and to be able to use bolted joints.
  4. To understand packing, clutch, brake and springs and to be able to explain them.
