Course content
This class aims to discuss the problems on urban design and city planning in the modern and contemporary period, to grasp the nature of the problems.
The students will study the urban and contemporary issues on architecture and city planning through a wide range of points of view including historical and urban perspective. One of the main purpose of this class is to find the right direction on the architectural and urban design from the urban and historical point of view.

The first half of the classes (the first to the seventh) will be lectured by Horikoshi and the last half (the eighth to the fifteenth) by Nishizawa.
The first half will deal with of the urban and architectural design issues through the psychological and philosophical point of view as well as the history of urban and outer space. The last half will cover the problems of modern cities from historical, political, economical and scientific point of view and make clear the flow of urban transformation from pre-modern to modern, and modern to near future.
Purpose of class
The objective of this course is to be able to visualize the image of ideal city in future, through looking closely at the present and historical Urban Planning from multiple points of view.

  2. To understand the design process of the building and learn about the city environment.
  3. To understand and learn about the social nature of the architect.
  4. To understand the relationship of the city and society, to obtain a basis for architectural design.
