1 Earthquake Disaster Mitigation of Buildings/ Exercise 1
Reducing earthquake damage to buildings and cities is a priority issue in many countries including Japan which are located
in earthquake regions. In this course, various basic topics of structural systems for a seismic resistence will be described:
1. seismic design for new buildings; 2. seismic diagnosis and seismic retrofit in existing buildings; 3. assessment methods
for aseismic behavior of building which will form the basis for judging the damage level for buildings and developing restoration
methods.
In this course students will conduct fracture experiments and theoretical analysis on the members and frame of reinforced
concrete structures, in order to understand the concept of buildings collapse during an earthquake.
- It is possible to master the seismic performance evaluation method of the current buildings.
- It is possible to master the theoretical analysis on strength and deformation of reinforced concrete members and frames.
- Experiments on reinforced concrete members and literature surveys enable us to extract the problems of the current seismic
design method.

Evaluation method and criteria
Students will be evaluated based on reports (out of 80 points) related to fracture experiment reports (out of 60 points) and
building aseismic capacity. A grade of 60% or higher will be required to pass.
