Steel building structure /Exercise 1

ASADA Hayato
Course content
The purpose of this course is to develop the expertise and problem-solving skills necessary for structural engineers to be responsible for the safety and security of buildings through researches aimed at achieving buildings that are safe against natural disasters, especially earthquakes. The course involves structural analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental testing to develop rational structural steel design and steel fabrication. This course, in particular, focuses on structural connections that significantly impact the seismic performance of steel buildings.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand the basics of structural design and fabrication methods for steel building structures in high seismic regions.
  2. Understand elastic-plastic behavior of steel structural system as well as that of individual members and connections
  3. Be able to practice theoretical analysis necessary for evaluating structural capacity
  4. Be able to identify problems in current structural design and fabrication methods and to formulate solutions through research activities.
Language
Japanese(English accepted)
Class schedule
Students will conduct experimental and analytical research on the following subjects to develop the expertise and problem-solving skills.
1. structural steel design.
2. evaluation of the seismic performance of steel structural buildings
3. steel fabrication method to achieve the required structural performance in a reasonable manner.
First, students should fully understand and grasp the background and purpose of the research. Next, students plan the approach and method necessary to solve the problem, analyze and consider the results, and summarize the results in a master's thesis. The series of work is carried out while exchanging opinions with the supervisor.
Evaluation method and criteria
Grading will be based on the process of writing a dissertation as well as a final outcome regarding structural steel design and/or steel fabrication. An overall score of 60% or higher is considered passing.
