Course description

In design, it is necessary to understand the behavioral characteristics of the target users and then design somethings that are appropriate for those users. In order to do this, we must conduct experiential research and observation as if we were the users themselves, and derive "potential issues that the users themselves are not clearly aware of" from this observation. On the other hand, when designing based on these issues, it is necessary to "induce a new way of human behavior by combining various means in a complex manner" because a mere product alone may not be able to encourage users to change their behavior. In this class, students will learn a series of practical processes to derive issues from these experiential investigations and observations, and to conceptualize an overall mechanism.
Since the majority of this course is active learning, class content will be changed as needed in light of the situation.

Purpose of class

This class is designed to cultivate the basic knowledge and skills to "design an overall concept" by "discovering latent issues that are not clearly recognized" through experiential research and observation, and through conducting design task is "to induce a new mode of human behavior through a complex combination of various means.

Goals and objectives

Can discover the characteristics and properties of the subject under investigation from experiential human investigation and observation.
Can understand and explain the basic design process.
Can prioritize and discard information from a variety of sources and extract the underlying issues.

Evaluation method and criteria

Basically, the evaluation is based on the submission of assignments and their peer review. In principle, the median is used for the peer review. If all the assignments are submitted and all the peer reviews are judged to be "acceptable" or better, the student is considered to have obtained a score of 60% and is considered to have passed.
