Course description

In manufacturing, we have to take responsibility for our production. Therefore, in order to achieve unbreakable and "safe and secure" manufacturing, it is necessary to grasp and understand quantitatively the forces and moments acting on objects. In this course, we aim to learn about dynamics, specifically, dynamics of quality points, dynamics of quality point systems, and motion and dynamics of rigid bodies. In particular, students will learn about momentum and force products, work, conservation laws, and the treatment of parallel and rotational motions. Students will also learn about vibrations in one degree of freedom.

Purpose of class

The objective of this class is to acquire the concept of rigid body dynamics. The specific objectives are as follows
1. To be able to formulate equations of motion of rigid bodies, solve them, and understand their meaning.
2. To be able to calculate the dynamic quantities of translational and rotational motions, and to be able to explain these motions.
3. To be able to model vibration and explain its motion.

Understand the relationship between forces. (Can calculate the decomposition and synthesis of forces and moments in terms of vectors.)
Understand the motion of rigid bodies (translational and rotational motion) and quantitatively evaluate their motion.
Understand the motion of vibration and explain the meaning of natural frequencies.
To be able to quantitatively evaluate the motion of objects.

Evaluation method and criteria

There will be two reports (worth 20 points), a mid-term examination (worth 40 points) and a final examination (worth 40 points), for a total of 100 points. The report will be divided into two parts.
Out of a maximum of 100 points, 60 points will be considered a pass. The criteria for the level of passing is the ability to calculate the basic quantities of force and moment and to understand their meaning. Students should be able to calculate quantities of motion of a quality point, formulate equations of motion of a quality point, evaluate translational motion, rotational motion, energy, conservation laws, and calculate quantities.

Reference books: Any book on industrial mechanics is acceptable.
