This course introduces the foundation of macroscopic thermodynamics. The course deals with thermodynamic properties, ideal
gas, the first law of thermodynamics, internal energy, enthalpy, and application of the first law to close and open systems
of ideal gas processes. This course also deals with the basic principle of second law of thermodynamics, entropy, exergy
and use of entropy for engineering applications.
The aim of this class is to help students acquire the basic knowledge needed to understand the concept of the first and second
law of thermodynamics.
- Obtain basic knowledge to understand the thermodynamic concept of quantities of state: temperature, pressure, heat, work, and enegy.
- Understand the first law of thermodynamics and application of the first law to close and open systems of ideal gas processes.
- Understand and explain the second law of thermodynamics and Carnot cycle. Also, understand and explain the relationship of reversible and irreversible processes from the viewpoint of entropy change.
