Course description
Here we will learn about the mechanical behavior of structures and materials, from the continuum description of properties to the atomistic mechanisms that confer those properties to all materials. We will cover elastic and plastic deformation and fracture of materials including pure metal and alloys, and will focus on the design and processing of materials from the atomic to the macroscale to achieve desired mechanical behavior.
Purpose of class
The aim of this lecture is to understand the strengthening method of materials. Through the learning of the relationship between microstructure and strength of materials, we will understand the principle of the strength from a viewpoint of atomic order and microstructure of materials.
Goals and objectives
  1. To learn about the mechanical behavior of structures and materials, from the continuum description of properties to the atomistic mechanisms that confer those properties to all materials.
  2. To learn about elastic and plastic deformation and fracture of materials including pure metal and alloys.
  3. To calculate the strength of materials at the various conditions.
  4. To learn about the design and processing of materials from the atomic to the macroscale to achieve desired mechanical behavior.
