Course description
How lives are developed is explained. Various stresses that life faces and the DNA damage it causes are explained. In addition, birth of species, the deaths of life, the deaths of cells, and the life sciences to overcome them are explained.
[Notice]
(1) Please note that if there are too many applicants for a class, the class may be decided by lottery.
(2) In addition to the classroom lecture style using the board and projector, attendance checks and quizzes will be conducted using the network system. Please note that you will need to prepare your network environment and PC environment in advance.
(3) Regardless of whether the class is face-to-face or online, we will use Google Classroom, a system similar to ScombZ, to check attendance and administer quizzes for each lecture (mid-term and final exams are yet to be determined). Google Classroom requires that students register for classes, and we will announce how to register for Google Classroom through ScombZ after regular registration (only students who have taken Biology II will be notified of this announcement). Please make sure to always check for announcements from ScombZ.
Purpose of class
First, you learn how vertebrates, such as humans, form and grow from fertilized eggs, following the process.
You learn not only the whole body development but also the development of complex organs.
Life is under stress at various levels at the individual and cellular levels. You learn about DNA damage caused by stress and learn DNA repair.
You also learn the birth and evolution of life after the birth of the earth along the time axis.
You learn about the world of life, ecosystems, that spread on the earth.
Finally, you learn about the relationship between human diseases and genes and the latest medical technologies to overcome them.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand how a body is developed from single cell.
  2. Understand the differences in cleavage mode among animal species in the early development of life.
  3. Understand the types of stress on cells and the mechanism of DNA damage.
  4. Understand the evolution and diversity of life.
  5. Understand the causes of cancer and other human diseases and the mechanism of their development.

Evaluation method and criteria
Grades are evaluated based on the results of 40% for the middle exam, 40% for the final exam and 20% for the mini test. A total score of 60% or more means passed. The exam covers printed documents, additional documents, lecture notes and oral comments. You could get 80% in the exam, if you fully understand the content of the lecture.
Feedback on exams, assignments, etc.
ways of feedback specific contents about "Other"
Feedback in outside of the class (ScombZ, mail, etc.)
Textbooks and reference materials
No textbook will be used.
Materials (PDF file format) for each lecture will be uploaded to ScombZ or Google Classroom. Please download the materials beforehand.
In the materials distributed in this lecture, important keywords are omitted in parentheses.
During the lecture, the material with the key words will be displayed.
Please write the correct word in parentheses in the material you have downloaded in advance.
Each parenthesis is numbered sequentially, and the keywords displayed in the lecture are also numbered sequentially.
You can also write the keywords directly on the PDF file. However, you will need to research and prepare the necessary software and methods.

If the above is difficult for you, we recommend the following methods.
(Method 1) Print out the distributed PDF file in advance and fill it in as you take the course.
(Method 2) If printing is difficult, while watching the lecture on the screen, write only the [Serial Number] and [Key Word] displayed on the screen in the notebook prepared by you, and write each key word on the PDF file after the lecture.
