Course content
[Outline of the Lecture]
This lecture explains the hydrologic characteristics of river basins, their mathematical expressions, and the analytic methods for integrated river basin management. The current river management issues in Japan and worldwide concern flood protection, water resource utilisation, and ecological conservation. State-of-the-art research topics on flood disasters and riverine environmental conservation with/without recent global climate change are reviewed.

Purpose of class
To obtain the basic knowledge of hydrologic characteristics and environmental changes in river basins in Japan and worldwide.

To understand the importance of integrated management concerning flood protection, water resources utilisation, and river basins' ecological conservation.

To obtain state-of-the-art knowledge in flood disaster protection and riverine environmental conservation research topics.
Goals and objectives
  1. The student will explain the characteristics of the water/material cycles in a river basin and the role of channel design at a river course from the civil engineering point of view.
  2. The student will explain the current/past environmental changes in river basins in Japan and worldwide.
  3. The student will explain the importance of integrated management concerning flood protection, water resource utilization, and river basins' ecological conservation.
  4. The student will obtain state-of-the-art knowledge on flood disaster protection and riverine environmental conservation through research papers.

Evaluation method and criteria
The student will obtain the credit for this lecture if the total score exceeds 60% with more than 80% attendance.

Final Examination: 40%.
