Course content
Nowadays optics and related technologies are of importance in many fields, including mechanical engineering. This course introduces basic optics including spectroscopy, lasers and laser applications to students taking this course. Laser is the most important light source in modern optical technology.
Purpose of class
First, you will learn basic optics, beginning with Maxwell's equation. Next, you will learn the principle of laser oscillation, and the characteristics of laser beam. Then, you will be introduced various kinds of optics/laser applications, such as optical spectroscopy and microscopy.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students can explain how optical phenomena and optical technologies are used in mechanical engineering
  2. Students can explain basic principles of optics and optical instruments
  3. Students can explain the principle of laser oscillation, and can explain the characteristics of laser beam based on the principle of laser oscillation
  4. Students can explain various kinds of applications of optical technology (including lasers)
