Course content
Mechanical loading or stimulation to biological tissue causes deformation and some physiological response. Such mechanical and physiological responses induces internal damage, which develops into macroscopic injury. The one of the most common situations in which a large mechanical loading applies to human body is traffic accident. Number of death in traffic accident in Japan is decreasing but we have more than 4,000 casualties per year. Injury biomechanics and its application contribute reduction of casualties in traffic accidents. In this course, basics of biomechanics and injury mechanics will be lectured. Also related knowledge about anatomy and human kinetics will be included.
Purpose of class
The aim of this course is to help students acquire an understanding of the fundamental principles of injury and injury prevention engineering.

  1. At the end of the course, participants are expected to explain the injury mechanism based on biomechanics.
  2. At the end of the course, participants are expected to analyze the causal relationship of an accident from the viewpoint of biomechanics.
  3. At the end of the course, participants are expected to explain the latest traffic safety engineering.

Evaluation method and criteria
The final grade will be calculated according to students' presentations (JSAE Expo report, and accident reconstruction & injury assessment).
Grade C needs logically valid presentations using understandable presentation materials.

Prerequisites
Participants should understand the basis of the rigid body dynamics and material mechanics. It is better to have the basic knowledge on the human anatomy and kinematics.
