Course description
This is an introductory course on the Constitution of Japan. It also deals with the following aspects: Constitutionalism, the principles underlying the Constitution, the governing structure, and the importance and means of protecting fundamental human rights.

* The classes will be conducted face-to-face in principle.

Omiya: Spring/Fall, Tuesday 3rd period (HONDA)
Toyosu: Spring/Fall, Tuesday 3rd period; Fall, Tuesday 5th period (SHIBATA)
Purpose of class
The course aims to help students develop a legal perspective on the Constitution. To this end, it focuses on the legal significance of the Constitution, the relationship between the state and the people, and the constitutional problems and questions that characterize modern society.
Goals and objectives
  1. To obtain basic knowledge about the Constitution of Japan, understand constitutionalism and explain them
  2. To recognize and explain the significance of the governing system in Japan
  3. To recognize and explain the substance of fundamental human rights and the importance of guarantee of them
  4. To develop earnest interest about constitutional problems, such as amendment, security, and other related questions
  5. To learn with a sense of purpose and create awareness about the contents and significance of the Constitution, if a student aspires to be a teacher

Evaluation method and criteria
The allocation of the overall grade for this course is presented below:
・Submission of Documents, etc.: 40%
・Midterm Examination: 30%
・Final Examination: 30%
To pass the course, students must earn at least 60 points of 100. Students can score 60 points or more if they can state in a clear manner their opinions, in assignments and the examinations, about the topics discussed in class and the key topics in the textbook.
Students are required to attend at least two-thirds of the total number of classes. If this requirement is not fulfilled, credits will not be awarded.

・Please pay attention to the news and current happenings about the Constitution. Aim to become the ideal teacher, and learn with a sense of purpose, if a student takes a teacher-training course.
・Please read the syllabus and attend the first class.
・Please prepare an Internet-capable (Wi-Fi-enabled) laptop. On ScombZ, handouts will be distributed and examinations, etc. will be given.
