Course description
This course introduce the foundations of human cognition or perception, or thinking to students taking this course. From the viewpoint of hardware and software, we think about human beings based on everyday human experience. Conduct psychological experiments and observations online.
Purpose of class
In order to make the products or systems or environment, it is required to understand about not only engineering characteristics but also the human characteristics to use it. In this course, consider for interaction with human cognitive characteristics and the environment, by previous studies and some experiment among this course .
The basic aspect to create safe and easy-to-use and efficient products or systems will learn.
Goals and objectives
  1. At the end of the course, participants are expected to understand overview of modern scientific psychology and cognitive psychology
  2. At the end of the course, participants are expected to distinguish between psychology and false psychology
  3. At the end of the course, participants are expected to consider psychologically about their own behavior (mind).

A score of over 60% is required to pass.
The evaluation points of the report are as follows:
Whether the presentation is as specified, easy-to-understand expressions, logical and rational considerations are made, your own opinions and ideas are stated, and the layout and design of the report are excellent.

Class schedule

Class schedule HW assignments (Including preparation and review of the class.) Amount of Time Required
1. Introduction: What is Cognitive psychology/Scientific and Psychology:How to study psychology read the syllabus 60minutes
2. Scientific and Psychology:How to study psychology Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
3. Human memory1:Experiment 1,2
Two simple experiments will be conducted to understand the characteristics of human memory.(Implemented face-to-face or online)
In the experiment, i will explain how to do it first, practice it, and then go to production.
Please participate with honest feelings without prejudice.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
4. Human memory2:Experiment 3,4
In 3 and 4,Experiments are conducted. Please participate as much as possible. The experiment conducted will be one of the themes of the interim report.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
5. Human memory3:The Storage Model,The Level of Processing,Organization of Memory
The results of the experiments conducted will be explained, including some famous research results. Think about aspects of human memory.
I will also give a cognitive psychological explanation of mnemonics.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
6. Perception 1:Depth perception
Introducing the basic characteristics of perception.
As a representative of perception, we will focus on "vision" and introduce "seven functions of the visual system". The first is "perception of depth." Think about why you can perceive distance using a two-dimensional retinal image as a clue.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
7. Perception 2:Sensitivity adjustmento of visual system
The visual system adjusts the sensitivity to light. Through a simple experiment, you will experience the sensitivity adjustment of the visual system. Relatedly, I will introduce the perception of color through a simple experiment.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
8. Perception 3:Stability of Visual World
The "retinal image", which is the visual point of contact between the world and the perceiver, is changing drastically. However, the outside world is perceived in a stable manner. Through a simple experiment, we will consider the stability of the visual space.

Perception 4:Completion
Through simple experiments and observations, we will consider the characteristics of the visual system that complement the missing information or the physical stimuli.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
9. Perception 5:Perceptual Constancy
Consider the characteristic (perceptual constancy) that even if the retinal image changes physically, it does not feel much change perceptually.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
10. Perception 6:Emphasis
Consider the characteristics of the visual system that emphasize physical stimuli or information.

Perception 7:Figure-Ground 1
Think about the process by which the visual space is recognized as a stable world. Through observation, we think that the whole is not the sum of the parts, and that the whole defines the parts.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
11. Perception 8:Figure-Ground 2
Following 10, we will consider the formation of the visual space and the visual world.

Declarative Knowledge and Procedural Knowledge 1
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
12. Declarative Knowledge and Procedural Knowledge
Introducing perceptual skills, motor skills, etc., and thinking about skill acquisition. Through a simple experiment, think about "internal programs" and the execution of inappropriate exercise programs.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
13. Logical Thinking 1 / Explanation of Final Report
Think about the logical judgment that is a characteristic of human thinking.
I will explain the final report assignment.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
14. Logical Thinking 2 / Review
I will review the three major themes of cognitive psychology (thinking, memory, and perception) and reconsider the relationship between manufacturing and cognitive psychology.
Make a review of the previous lecture 200minutes
