Course description
This course aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills. By reading various academic articles with different topics, students will enhance their ability to identify the main ideas and supporting details of a text without relying on translation into Japanese. Students will improve their grammar and word usage skills through reading academic articles, and will also be able to express their critical thinking on various topics in English through discussions and paragraph writing assignments. Students will also be required to self-study TOEIC through the e-learning system, Super-English, to score higher on the reading sections of the TOEIC test.

  1. Be able to quickly grasp the main points of English academic articles in various study fields.
  2. Acquire the grammar and vocabulary necessary for university students and be able to use them.
  3. Can produce academic paragraphs based on critical thinking and can discuss them.
  4. Be able to score higher on the TOEIC test.

Evaluation method and criteria
The final score is calculated as follows: 80% of the class score (100 points) + 20% of the TOEIC IP test score for a full score. A minimum score of 60% is required to pass the course. For this course, a TOEIC IP score of 700 is considered a perfect score (100 points); scores above 700 will be counted as 100 points, and if the TOEIC score is less than 200, it is converted to a score of 0. 30% of the mid-term and final tests will be administered from the TOEIC mini test. A score of 55 or higher will be converted to 100 points.

Participation: 20%
Writing assignments / Short tests: 8% / 12%
Mid-semester test: 30% (30% of the mid-semester test is assessed with TOEIC mini test)
Final test: 30% (30% of the final test is assessed with TOEIC mini test)

A score of 60% is needed to pass this course.
Students can expect to obtain more than 60 points if their performance on tests and assignments shows that they have mostly comprehended the learning contents of the course.
