Course description
Why are engineers required to have "ethics"? What are the "ethics of engineers"?
This course aims to make students more realistic and aware of the fact that they must be engineers with ethical skills while they are studying their specialty.
Since this course is intended for 3rd and 4th year students, students will learn more concretely about issues related to technology in society, understand what engineers can do and the significance of their existence in society, and learn how to make ethical decisions, What is "ethical decision-making" and how can we realize (act on) such ethical decision-making? What is "ethical decision-making" and how can we realize (act on) such ethical decision-making?
This lecture will be conducted by actively incorporating opportunities for discussion.
Purpose of class
Technological development has brought many benefits to society and people, and has realized a more affluent society. However, while further technological development is progressing, there are also various issues such as the quality of affluence and disparities in affluence that have arisen as a result of affluence, and the maintenance of the global environment. In addition, technological scandals (accidents) have also had a significant impact on society, and there have been many accidents and cases (scandals) that have caused society to distrust technology, engineers, and organizations that possess technology. Furthermore, as technology and society become more complex, technological problems cannot be solved by technology alone.
In this lecture, the first step of "engineer ethics" is for engineers to understand (1) that technology always has both positive and negative aspects, and (2) that there are many problems that cannot be solved by technology alone within the scope of their own responsibility. (2) The first step of "technological ethics" is to understand that (1) technology always has both positive and negative aspects. Therefore, the course aims to promote understanding of the difficulties of ethical issues in the real world, using real and hypothetical cases, and to cultivate the ability to move forward as engineers with pride.
We hope that the students will realize that engineering ethics is not merely the observance of norms, but a creative intellectual activity of "designing one's own behavior" while balancing the various "values" that surround engineers, and that they will become engineers who try to improve their own abilities in this area.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students understand the great responsibility that engineers have in today's society.
  2. Students understand the "value" that is important to engineers when making decisions.
  3. Students can make appropriate ethical decisions based on the Values.
  4. Students understand that technical skills are not the only skills required for engineers, and especially understand the difficulty and importance of being able to explain one's own ideas to others while at the same time being able to discuss them in a way that acknowledges the existence of "others" with different opinions.
  5. To be able to simulate ethical dilemmas through case studies, analyze their major points, and discuss them in relation to one's own experiences and factual research.
  6. Students can consider specifically what kind of organization you would like to work for.

Evaluation method and criteria
Attendance rate of 75% is assumed because of less burden of preparation/revision. (In case of unavoidable absence, an alternative report can be submitted upon request.)
Grades will be based on the total of a short report and a final report.
The standard for passing the course (60%) is a minimum attendance rate of 75%, an understanding of the responsibilities of the student (engineer), and the ability to explain in one's own words what specific actions should be taken based on this understanding in the short report and final report.

Textbooks and reference materials
Lecture handouts (e.g., excerpts from the presented ppt) will be distributed instead of the textbook.
There are many books on ethics for engineers, so it would be good if you can find one that suits your own needs.
Prerequisites
No major preparation is required before taking the course, but it is advisable to be actively exposed to news reports and books on troubles and accidents related to engineers and engineering companies, and to think about them in one's own way at times. The course is not designed to prepare students for the course.
