Catalytic Chemistry

KONISHI Toshifumi
Course description
Catalyst is a functional material that is the key to material-conversion in our society. Functions of the catalyst are acceleration of desirable reactions, slowing down the unwanted reactions (side-reactions). So, we can say that the "kinetic" material design can be considered. In this class, we will learn both position of the catalyst-designer and the catalyst-using engineer.
Purpose of class
The understanding of each item below:

(1) The usefulness of the catalyst from the viewpoint of chemistry, materials, industries (production, process)
(2) Catalyst in the field of chemistry
(3) Reaction mechanism with catalyst
(4) Catalyst design guidelines based on (1) to (3)
Goals and objectives
  1. Explanation of the usefulness of catalysts
  2. Explanation of the catalytic reaction based on chemistry.
  3. Explanation of the reaction mechanism of existing catalytic reaction
  4. Explanation of the design guidelines for existing catalysts
